About Us

In the early 1980s, Steve Nixon recognized a need for the rural communities on the north island (and the gulf islands) to have a one-stop shop for animal feed, farm supplies, and building products…a shop that would save “neighbours” a trip to Courtenay or Campbell River for supplies.

That one-stop shop is the award-winning Black Creek Farm & Feed Supply, which Steve opened in 1983 and is still growing and going strong today.

But, that’s not the end of the story.

There is also a love story behind Black Creek Farm & Feed. Steve met Helen at the store, and they fell in love and married in 1988. Not only did Steve get a wife, but he became personally immersed in the farming business as he helped on the in-law’s farm–Glen Alwin on the Island Highway.

This ongoing experience gives him first-hand knowledge to share with farming customers, big and small—providing advice on everything from pasture management to animal care… shelter-construction to watering systems.

Steve and the dedicated staff–the Black Creek Farm & Feed “family”—knew then, and certainly know now—30 years later—that a vast assortment of products is not enough for long-term success.

Personal service, including advice based on ongoing training and their own in-the-field experience with construction and farming, complements the products and competitive pricing to provide a unique, rural one-stop shopping experience for you.

National Buying Power… Local Knowledge & Smiles

While a commitment to service has not changed one bit, other things have changed. In particular, to allow Black Creek Farm & Feed to expand to accommodate the population growth, and to survive in ever-changing retail market of the Comox Valley-Campbell River region of Vancouver Island, Black Creek Farm & Feed became a member of the IRLY/TIM-BR Mart buying groups.

This strategic move allows Black Creek Farm & Feed to take advantage of collective buying power—allowing Steve Nixon and his team to provide a greater variety of products at prices that are competitive with the big-box stores that have moved into the region.

We Deliver!

The addition of a delivery service has also allowed Black Creek Farm & Feed to service additional markets. The store provides delivery of many products from Campbell River to Royston, and also offers crane service for delivery of building materials and heavy farm products, such as agricultural lime and fertilizer.

In 2012, Black Creek Farm & Feed introduced delivery to the island communities, as well, including Denman and Hornby, as well as Quadra and Cortes.

Caring For Residents & Businesses

As the area has grown since 1983, Black Creek Farm & Feed has, too. The store expanded its offerings to include a Garden Centre, a Lumber Yard, and a greater array of building products—everything you could need to build a home, barn, out-building, or renovation project. This expansion was not only welcomed by residents, but by local contractors for whom travel time from the rural job sites to retail regions for materials and supplies could be costly.
